If we’re searching for a getaway that blends history, nature, and a touch of local charm, Lake Starnberg in Bavaria is the perfect destination. About 25 kilometers southwest of Munich, this lake offers crystal-clear waters, rolling hills, and historic wooden boat houses lining the shore.
These wooden structures date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and they were originally used to store fishing boats and equipment.
Walking along the lakeside, we can feel the peaceful rhythm of local life and imagine the stories of generations who lived by the water. It’s also a great spot for photography enthusiasts and anyone looking to escape the bustle of the city.

How to Reach Lake Starnberg

Getting to the lake is simple and convenient.
From Munich:
- Train (S-Bahn): Take the S6 or S8 line from Munich Hauptbahnhof. The journey takes roughly 40 minutes, and from Starnberg station, it’s only a 10-minute walk to the lake. Tickets cost around $10–$12 per person, depending on the exact zone.
- Driving: We can also take the A95 highway south. Exiting at Starnberg and following the signs, the drive is approximately 30 kilometers and takes around 30–40 minutes. Parking is available near popular lakeside spots, often for $3–$5 per hour.
Public transport and driving both give us easy access to the lakeside trails and the historic boat houses.
